Many girls or websites who consider themselves to be nerds/nerdy, are actually just creepy. I don’t think being obsessed with Harry Potter or Dr Who makes you a nerd. It makes you fairly average. And being way too into their related (and other might I add) fan-fictions also does not make you a nerd, just creepy.
It seems odd to me that so many people (mainly girls) go out of their way to be seen as a ‘nerd’, but they do this by reading fiction a lot or playing video games and being very…I don’t know what the best word is for it…overtly defensive(?). Having to announce things like:
’Gamer girls aren’t like X, we’re like Y instead’
or trying to be seen as awesome because they play games AND are a girl.
This may sound hypocritical, me going on like this, but to me the difference between girl gamers and guy gamers is a matter of biology and nothing more. (I am NOT going into the whole gender vs sex thing right now).
I don’t know when the definition of Nerd Girl became: a girl who read a lot of fiction and plays video games and is nothing else, but it bothers me that this is all it seems to be.
It is OK to be into reading, or video games, or comic books, or whatever you are into. It’s just infuriating when people try really hard to fit into what was once an outcast or alternative group buy checking off the boxes.
I guess what I’m angry at is why aren’t people just people.
